Fast forward a year, and a teenage Randy, along with his brother Ricky, formed a formidable duo, captivating audiences with their performances at fiddler conventions, parties, and Moose halls. However, as Randy entered his teenage years, he found himself entangled in a dangerous path. Experimenting with alcohol, acid, Quaaludes, and speed became a daily occurrence, leading him perilously close to disaster. His actions included breaking into a van, stealing from a grocery store, causing significant damage to four cars, and even engaging in a high-speed chase with the police, reaching an astonishing 130 mph.

In 1981, when Hatcher relocated to Nashville and acquired a new establishment called “The Nashville Palace,” Randy eagerly followed her, embracing the city’s vibrant music scene.

In 1986, now known as “Randy Travis,” the artist garnered attention from record executives through his remarkable performances at the Nashville Palace. Subsequently, he signed with Warner Bros. Records, coinciding with the rise of the “Neo-Traditional” movement in country music. Randy’s career soared, marked by the release of two immensely successful multi-platinum albums, “Storms of Life” and “Always and Forever.”

While Randy had been writing songs since the age of 17, it took him nearly five years to create a true masterpiece. That moment arrived with “I Told You So,” a gem featured on his album “Always and Forever.” Interestingly, the song had initially been recorded by Darrell Clanton, whose only claim to fame was a cover of Hawkshaw Hawkins’ 1963 hit, “Lonesome 7-7203.” Clanton had placed “I Told You So” on the B-side of his final release. Unfortunately, the song failed to capture attention at that time. Undeterred, Randy had contemplated recording it himself for his debut album, but his producer, Kyle Lehning, didn’t show much enthusiasm for the idea. Consequently, Randy set the song aside, patiently waiting for the right moment.

Eventually, when the time came to record his second album, Lehning had a change of heart and embraced the idea of including “I Told You So.” The song was released as the fourth single from the “Always and Forever” album and swiftly ascended to the top of Billboard’s country chart on June 11, 1988, following the footsteps of its three predecessors.
