Unveiling the Enchanting Tale: The Journey Behind Merle Haggard’s “Natural High”
Merle Haggard, a legendary singer and songwriter, achieved yet another milestone with his chart-topping hit “Natural High” on June 8, 1985. This remarkable achievement marked his 52nd week at the pinnacle of the Billboard country singles chart, signifying a glorious year of consecutive number one hits.
Surprisingly, Haggard did not pen this particular song himself. The credit goes to his close friend, Freddy Powers. It all began during a visit to Willie Nelson‘s Pedernales Ranch in Texas when Powers had a phone conversation with his girlfriend, Debbie DeFazio, a vibrant jazz vocalist. Amused by her infectious spirit, Powers spontaneously commented, “You’re always on a natural high.” Little did he know, this casual remark would spark the inspiration for a song. He quickly jotted down the idea on a piece of paper during his flight to Lake Tahoe, Nevada, where he was scheduled to meet Haggard. When Merle first listened to “Natural High,” he confidently declared to Powers, “That’s a number one song right there.”
The magic of the song didn’t stop there. In the studio, another unexpected collaboration elevated its essence. Janie Fricke, coincidentally crossing paths with Haggard in a Music Row parking lot alongside her husband and manager Randy Jackson, was invited by Merle to contribute her vocals to the track. Without hesitation, they promptly joined forces, adding an extra layer of richness to the song.
Additionally, the serendipitous inclusion of Lloyd Lindroth, a talented harpist and a friend of Powers, added a captivating element to “Natural High.” Encountering Lindroth in the lobby of the Opryland Hotel, the team decided to invite him to join the recording session. Producer Ray Baker admits his initial uncertainty about incorporating a harp, but as fate would have it, the harmonious melodies woven by Lindroth’s harp perfectly complemented the composition, creating an unparalleled sound that truly breathed life into the record.
At this stage of Haggard’s illustrious career, he was transitioning into a new chapter, and “Natural High” proved to be a defining moment. Soaring to the number one position for the 37th time, this remarkable achievement became Merle’s penultimate chart-topper and the ninth solo number one hit he didn’t write himself.
“Natural High” stands as a testament to the timeless talent of Merle Haggard, his ability to recognize a hit, and the magic that can be woven through unexpected collaborations. It is a testament to the power of music to captivate and elevate the human spirit, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of listeners for generations to come.

Lyrics
You stayed with me through thick and thin
Watched me lose, you watched me win
You picked me up off of the ground
You never one time let me down
And you put me on a natural high
And I can fly, I can fly
I was drowning in a sea of make-believe
As helpless as a falling leaf
You gave your hand to me that day
And you did it, ”cause you’re made that way
And you put me on a natural high
And I can fly, I can fly
You always seem to let your feelings show
You love me and you let me know
Darling just remember these three words:
I love you, I love you
And you put me on a natural high
And I can fly, I can fly
And you put me on a natural high
And I can fly, I can fly
Hello. And Bye.
