The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced its 2023 inductees, which include the legendary country singer Willie Nelson, alongside Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Kate Bush, George Michael, The Spinners, and Rage Against the Machine. In addition, DJ Kool Herc and Link Wray will receive the musical influence award, while Chaka Khan, Al Kooper, and Bernie Taupin will receive the Musical Excellence Award. Don Cornelius will be honored with the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
The induction ceremony will take place on November 3, 2023, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. This year’s inductees were chosen by over 1,000 music industry professionals, historians, and artists, who recognized the diverse range of sounds that define rock & roll.
“The year’s incredible group of inductees reflects the diverse artists and sounds that define rock & roll,” said Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation chairman John Sykes in a statement. “We are honored that this November’s induction ceremony in New York will coincide with two milestones in music culture; the 90th birthday of Willie Nelson and the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip hop.”
Willie Nelson, who is turning 90 this year, has had an illustrious career in music, spanning over six decades. He is known for his unique blend of country, rock, and folk music, and has won numerous awards, including several Grammys.
The induction ceremony will also be a homecoming for Sheryl Crow, who is a duet partner with Willie Nelson and performed at his 90th birthday celebration at The Hollywood Bowl in California over the weekend.
While this year’s inductees were well-received, some artists who were up for consideration but didn’t make the cut include Cyndi Lauper, Soundgarden, The White Stripes, Iron Maiden, Joy Division, Warren Zevon, and A Tribe Called Quest.
