Instead, he embarked on crafting a ’50s rock-and-roll style song, giving birth to “Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Star.”
With the song partially written, Merle paid a visit to Freddy’s houseboat, inviting him to join in the creative process. Unfortunately, Freddy was unwell and had to decline the offer. Undeterred, Haggard confidently declared that he was writing a number one hit and that Freddy would regret missing out on it. As fate would have it, Merle’s prediction came true. “Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Star” reached the pinnacle of Billboard’s country singles chart on February 20, 1988, securing its place as his 38th chart-topper and the third most in history. Several singles later, Haggard achieved his final Top Ten appearance with “A Better Love Next Time,” marking his 72nd entry on the prestigious chart.
Notably, “Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Star” marked a significant milestone for producer Ken Suesov. It was the first record he produced to reach such heights of success, following his contributions to Merle’s “Big City” album and Shelly West’s chart-topping hit, “Jose Cuervo.”
